Chapter 3. Installation
In the current version, the installation procedure runs from the command line, allowing an easy installation even in mixed environments: for example, it is possible to install the IRIX version in a NFS share using a Linux machine, since the installer is just a shell script.
VolSurf can be installed locally (usually in your own home directory) or globally, for all the users in your system but a global installation will require root privileges.
Assuming you already downloaded the VolSurf archive from our web site and unpacked it, follow the next steps to install the package:
Step 1.
Change the current directory to the unpacked installation
cd volsurf-4.x.x-arch
Step 2.
Run the install script: you can (optionally) specify the destination directory in the command line. For example, if you want to install VolSurf in the directory /usr/local/volsurf type:
./install /usr/local/volsurf
Step 3.
The program will start asking you to agree to the Regular Terms and Conditions then it will ask, if not provided in the command line, for the path of the destination directory. Please note that the script will refuse to install VolSurf if the DIRECTORY ALREADY EXISTS or YOUR CURRENT USER ID CAN NOT WRITE to the chosen directory. That usually means you have to gain root privileges to install in directories like /usr/volsurf or /usr/local/volsurf.
After completing the installation, run the program typing the command
volsurf
If you made a local installation, the installer skipped the symbolic link creation, so to run the program you will have to specify the full path; for example, if you installed VolSurf in /home/john/vs4 you can run it with: /home/john/vs4/volsurf.
3.1. Obtaining and installing licenses
All copies of VolSurf require a license key to run. The licensing system is now much simpler and allows either a local install for a single workstation or installation in a NFS file server. Licenses are CPU-linked so each CPU requires a separate license key.
License lines looks like:
piccolo 1762618764 L VOLS_40 31-Mar-2005 162886751adr Key |
They are generated and shown in the screen during the installation, but will be shown again simply executing the program. In particular, if you are installing VolSurf on a NFS server you must run it in every workstation connected to the NFS server in order to obtain the corresponding license line for these CPUs.
Once you have obtained all the license lines, submit them through our web site: http://www.moldiscovery.com/panel.php. We will send you back the corresponding license keys. License keys are nearly identical to the license lines but, the word "Key" is replaced by some letters and, in some circumstances they might contain a different expiration date.
The license keys should be copied verbatim to the file license which is present in the destination directory. Once this file contains appropriate license keys you are allowed to run VolSurf and all the associate programs until the license expiration date. Approximately 10 days before the expiration date, VolSurf will remind you that the license is about to expire. In this case, please contact us at: http://www.moldiscovery.com.
3.2. Shared libraries requirements
All the shared libraries not included in a default installation of the supported operating systems are supplied in the archive. Starting with VolSurf 4, the officially supported platforms are:
SGI IRIX version 6.5.9 and newer
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3
Fedora Core
With other enviroments there could be added requirements (for example, openmotif), so our mileage may vary.
3.3. Customising VolSurf look
VolSurf uses SGI schemes in order to have a consistent look and feel with other SGI applications. The colour of the background and the foreground of the main window can be also changed including in root directory a resource file called Volsurf. The directory gifts present in the distribution directory contains an example that can be used as a template.
In addition, the aspect of the program can be changed using the schemes browser (schemebr) provided with the IRIX operative system.
If the icons were not installed due to insufficient writing permission, it's still possible to install them copying the icons present in the CD-ROM (directory /icons) to the the directory .icons of every user.
